Stripe announced on August 19 that it has acquired OpenRouter, a startup that routes prompts between different AI models. In a blog post, Stripe cited the 'singularity' as a motivation, but analysts point to more immediate business logic. OpenRouter's infrastructure could integrate with Stripe's payment processing to enable seamless billing for AI usage across multiple models. The deal signals a shift toward monetizing AI interactions as a core digital transaction layer.

Stripe didn't buy OpenRouter because of some sci-fi fantasy. It bought the tollbooth on the AI highway. Every prompt, every API call, every model switch needs a meter running. Stripe wants to be that meter. The singularity is just a shiny distraction for the press release.

This is the smartest move in AI infrastructure yet. While others chase AGI, Stripe is building the rails for the AI economy. Think about it: if every app becomes an AI app, then every transaction becomes an AI transaction. Who better to handle that than the company that already processes payments for the internet? OpenRouter gives Stripe the routing intelligence to know which model served what, and what to charge. That's not philosophy. That's commerce.
